Ya' gotta be tired of all of those surveys made up by high school kids. Here’s some questions for the people who are a little older...

1. What bill do you hate paying the most?
Ha. This is for grown-ups, isn't it. My rent is stupidly high because I had money when I sold my house and just grabbed the first place I liked (second house I looked at), but it's eaten all my capital and is not sustainable, so I suppose that's the one I like least. But hey, I had capital, and I love being here.

2. Do you miss being a child?
Christ, no. Awful.

3. Chore you hate the most?
Getting washing dry in the winter

4. Where was the last place you had a romantic dinner?
You'd think a person would remember that, wouldn't you? Not this one.

5. If you could go back and change one thing what would it be?
The temptation is to say I'd have kept my mother alive for a bit more than fifteen months after my birth, but then every single thing would be different. I wouldn't have the brothers and sister I have now and not the same kids. She may have been just as mean as my stepmother, or worse. Best stick with the way things are. Same goes for not smoking - different friends, different life. I'll go with the flow.

6. Name of your first grade teacher?
Mr Bailey is the first one whose name I remember but he was when I was eleven, which is probably not first grade.

7. What do you really want to be doing right now?
Don't I just wish I knew the answer to that as then I'd probably be doing it. I'm quite liking this as it's following instructions, something I've not often been very keen on but have developed a yearning for lately.

8. What did you want to be when you grew up?
Writer

9. How many colleges did you attend?
I started at Crawley Tech back in 1972 to retake my A Levels, but only turned up twice. Later I went to Sussex University for everything, because it's nearest - BA, started a PhD (in gender studies, focusing on masculinity which was then uncharted territory) but ran out of funding, then teaching cert, then creative writing cert.

10. Why did you choose the shirt that you have on right now?
It was top of the clean pile yesterday.

11. What are your thoughts on gas prices?
Not worth killing/dying for

12. First thought when the alarm went off this morning? Alarm? I think not. But first thought on waking was what a WEIRD fucking dream.

13. Last thought before going to sleep last night?
No idea - that bit always gets lost

14. What famous person would you like to have dinner with?
Germaine Greer or Russell Brand.

15. Have you ever crashed your vehicle?
Not crashed as such, at speed, but there have been incidents when parking

16. If you didn't have to work, would you volunteer?
I don't work and I'm building up to volunteering. Probably with the Prince's Trust, which works with young people who've slipped through the cracks.

17. Get up early or sleep in?
Sleep in

18. What is your favorite cartoon character?
Lisa Simpson

19. Favorite thing to do at night?
Write, listen to the radio, watch telly, smoke dope, chat on the phone. All pretty hard core.

20. When did you first start feeling old?
When I was fucking a guy thirty years younger than me.

21. Favorite lunch meat?
I have NO IDEA what lunch meat is.

22. What do you get every time you go into Wal-Mart?
I've only been to Wal-Mart once in my life. I bought a phone.

23. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual
No. I think expectations are ridiculously high, though. I'd make long engagements compulsory and divorce much easier.

24. Favorite movie you wouldn't want anyone to find out about?
None - I find this a weird question

25. What's your favorite drink?
I'm not a great one for favourite anything. I drink three or four espressos a day and then mainly water, but I'm liking Moscow Mule cocktails these days.

26. Who[m] from high school would you like to run in to?
Gina - where are you, girl?

27. What radio station is your car radio tuned to right now?
Radio 2

28. Sopranos or Desperate Housewives?
The Wire

29. Worst relationship mistake that you wish you could take back?

30. Do you like the person who sits directly across from you at work?
I've never lasted more than a couple of weeks in jobs like that, where you sit down all day.

31. Have you ever had to use a fire extinguisher for its intended purpose?
No

32. Last book you finished reading?
The Coroner by M R Hall. Fantastic

33. Do you have a teddy bear?
I had one my real mother gave me for my first birthday but I gave it to my grandson when he asked if he could have it.

34. Strangest place you have ever brushed your teeth?
I tend not to clean my teeth when in strange places

35. Do you go to church?
No
