annanotbob's Diaryland Diary

Nothing could be finer

Well, I never managed to get dressed today and I'm guessing it's a bit late now. Torrential rain on and off all day so it's all been a bit bleh. Sara's been up in her room working on that history of the function of portraiture dissertation and I've mainly been mooching from sofa to bed to kitchen to sofa.

I did manage to open the last of the boxes from the move, the one with all the CDs. We've only just got the stereo set up so we haven't needed them - we both use our PCs for music - and I'd forgotten what we had. The top layer was Sara's collection of audio books and that was as far as I got. Jerome K Jerome's Three men in a Boat, read by Hugh Laurie - what could be better on a wet bank holiday? (I posted the opening section earlier, as I just love it.) It's a late Victorian tale of three silly blokes taking a boat up the Thames for a week - stretches of comedy alternating with awful purple passages about the glory of nature - it's utterly delicious. I love it when I genuinely laugh at very old writing, so that's what I did, with the rain lashing against the windows, sewing and sniggering. Very pleasant.

Yesterday I planted up my vegetable plot - a row of six 'long tom' tall pots, two with tomatoes and four with runner beans, all set against a homemade trellis of bamboo sticks. I had quite a handful of bean seeds that I'd soaked left over so I shoved them in behind the bench and drenched them. They might grow, you never know. I couldn't bring myself to just throw them away.

I've taken pictures but now imageshack has chucked me off as well. Apparently it's because I use Opera for the internet and the photo uploading sites will only play with Internet Explorer or Firefox. Grrr.

Grateful for:

Ren staying the night and being funny (I can hear him talking to himself as I write, he's inflating the air bed and making a right bloody fuss about it, as if he thinks Sara or I will bale him out. Foolish boy.); a good book - Lee Child Bad Luck and Trouble - good as in totally engrossing, no particular literary or philosophical merit, I don't suppose, but it suits me right now; hearing from old friends; the washing machine isn't broken as we feared; my car is parked right outside my house - woo hoo, how often does that happen?

Sweet dreams xxx
